2nd Week
Reflection
2nd Week Challenges
Unit 2. Make Learning Meaningful for Students

Reflections on this unit’s challenges in my learning  journal

During this second week full of information, useful and interesting material we have read, tested, learnt, watched, looked at, shared to/with others. Personally, I have realized the importance for students to know what they are going to learn when they are asked for doing something. Teacher should/ must organize his/her ideas for teaching in a proper clear way. Templates can help them in order to clarify ideas, present missions. Teachers often discover that their students are not motivated to complete certain assignments, exercises or homework. These assignments tend to be class book work, memorizing vocabulary, completing worksheets, writing sentences, completing grammar exercises, or answering questions.
  • How will transforming an activity into a learning mission engage my students?
The reason students do not want to complete these assignments is often because they do not see the purpose or understand how completing the task will help them or others in a meaningful way. We can take the activities that do not engage our students and make them more meaningful by providing a hands-on task with a purpose to meet the intended learning objective of the activity. What we have called A Learning Mission.
Important things to take into account:
Send students on Learning Missions
Integrate Technology Effectively
Make it Fun
Badges earned by students
My first learning mission in this MOOC

  • How can digital badges motivate my students? A digital badge is an insignia given through a digital platform ( Credly.com for example) that is validated by an authority, organization, or person to indicate achievement, skill, level, or qualities. For example, digital badges can be given to students who help others around the school, volunteer, design a high-quality slide presentation, demonstrate leadership, or deliver an outstanding speech.
To earn a digital badge, the student must meet the criteria attached to the
badge and provide evidence, usually in the form of a link to the completed task.

My first badge created by me using www.makebadg.es/# , then I entered in Credly.com where I can prepare my students badges, and students can receive and manage their earned badges. Here it is:

2nd Week
MISSION

Create a learning mission for your students!

The aim of this activity is to make a simple activity more meaningful for your students. We want our students to care about completing the activity and see the purpose of the activity.
This is my Learning Mission

2nd Week
Travelling around, reading the suggested material given in the MOOC,surfing in the web, investigating all around I discovered Credly.
Credly
I really liked it. It surprised me. How you can design your own badge for student's in five minutes. First, you should have an account, very simple way to be a member. And “voilà”! You are in.
And also you receive a badge for being  an active member. Look, this is mine:

I am just starting with the design of my first badge. I started designing it in http://www.makebadg.es/# and then, I adjusted in Credly. This was the result:
I used the shield of our school to make it former, and more official, and thinking in the collaborative process we are working and developing in our classes, Good Helper was an excellent option.

* How can digital badges motivate my students?

It is a way to recognize they form part of a group  and badges are also a way of gamification and focus students in  the classroom.
A high MOTIVATION for students when they get a badge after a well-done work, or great effort to reach  final result. And when teachers get a badge or certification after doing a course or test, it becomes them highly motivated for continuing doing a great work, that is TEACHING,COACHING.
I am in the way😊

1 WEEK

Reflections concerning the first week's challenges:

First week is almost over and I have successfully completed the challenges.

I'm an English teacher at Luther King (La Laguna) school in Tenerife and  I teach my subject at secondary level , I also teach Geography subject and Music. This is a bilingual school and we prepare students to achieve the official Cambridge certification. We are using the iPad device in the classroom. A Great experience! We started 2 years ago.
But we , as teachers, should make them more conscious of the IPads improvements when they have to study, make projects, share ideas with their partners, presentations, work in groups. The iPad is an excellent tool for learning faster and adaptable to each student’s rhythm of working. Nowdays, students are demanding the use of new technologies in the classroom. Let’s teach them How to use it properly!
... and I will try to develope a strategy for achieving this goal or at least get a hint of it in this MOOC.

See you next week, with new challenges.
